Interview Guidelines for Mentees

These guidelines are designed to help you navigate each phase of the interview process. Discuss these points with your mentor to understand how to present yourself confidently and professionally.

Interview Format

Interviews typically follow this format: Introduction, Review, Discussion, Conclusion, and Follow-Up. Keep in mind that the interviewer’s style and company culture may also influence how the interview progresses.

The Introduction

The initial greeting sets the tone for the interview. This is your opportunity to make a positive first impression. Focus on the following:

  • Friendly Smile: Smile confidently and genuinely.
  • Firm Handshake: Offer a firm handshake to convey confidence.
  • Positive Attitude: Show enthusiasm and a positive outlook.
  • Professional Appearance: Dress in business attire; avoid overly trendy fashion.

The Review

The interviewer will likely ask questions about your background, interests, and abilities. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Be Clear and Concise: Provide answers that are clear, complete, and to the point.
  • Stay Positive: Highlight your strengths and avoid volunteering negative information.
  • Show Enthusiasm: Demonstrate a genuine interest in the role and company.

The Discussion (Also Known as the “Sell”)

This phase allows you to showcase how your background aligns with the position and the company’s needs. Focus on presenting your abilities effectively:

  • Match Your Skills to the Role: Discuss how your experience meets the job requirements and the company’s future goals.
  • Use Examples: Describe specific situations or actions that showcase your skills and the positive results achieved.
  • Research the Company: Ask questions that help you understand if this role and organization are right for you.

The Conclusion

The closing moments of the interview are just as important as the start. This is the time to reinforce your interest in the role and clarify any points:

  • Listen Carefully: Pay attention to any final remarks from the interviewer and respond thoughtfully.
  • Ask Job-Related Questions: Avoid discussing salary or benefits at this stage. Instead, ask questions about the role and company.
  • Express Your Interest: Confirm your enthusiasm for the role and ask about the next steps in the hiring process.
  • Thank the Interviewer: Conclude with a polite thank-you for their time and consideration.

The Follow-Up

The interview process isn’t complete until you follow up. Here’s how to handle this stage effectively:

  • Send a Thank-You Letter: Write a thank-you email to the interviewer, expressing gratitude and reinforcing your interest in the position. Use this as an opportunity to provide any additional information you may have missed.
  • Follow Up on the Decision: Mark your calendar to follow up with the interviewer about one week after the interview. This shows your enthusiasm for the position and keeps you on their radar.
  • Ask for Feedback: If you don’t get the position, consider asking the interviewer for feedback on areas you could improve. This can be valuable for future interviews.
